Standards of Performance for Academic Ranks
Note - Please see Faculty Responsibilities as outlined in Article 20
Preamble
The Ontario College of Art & Design, along with other university-level institutions devoted to professional education in art and design, has been established to develop society’s creative and intellectual resources and preserve its cultural traditions. The College has a responsibility to provide a vibrant and creative environment in which new knowledge, practices and ideas may evolve and flourish.
To this end, faculty are expected to be effective teachers, committed scholars and active practitioners who are dedicated to expanding their knowledge, professional practice and expertise, while making these endeavours accessible to the larger community. Faculty also make a significant contribution through Service to the College community. The continuing value and contribution of faculty to the advancement of educational goals and overall objectives of the Ontario College of Art & Design are essential to achieving the educational goals of the College.
“Standards of Performance” are used for a variety of purposes:
- For the initial establishment of Rank.
- For Performance Reviews (see Article 24.3), Standards of Performance are used in order to make recommendations concerning performance issues and Professional Development (where relevant), as well as to make recommendations concerning future re-appointment of CLTA faculty, continuation of Probationary faculty, and continuation and/or re-appointment of Continuing faculty.
- For Peer Reviews (see Article 24.4), Standards of Performance are used in order to make recommendations concerning conferral of Permanent Status and promotion of Rank.
- For Merit Progress (see Article 24.3.6), Standards of Performance are used in order to make qualitative decisions concerning faculty who have, in any given Academic Year, distinguished themselves through outstanding and meritorious endeavours.
In all cases, Standards of Performance take into account the following:
- Teaching & Teaching-Related Responsibilities;
- Professional Practice/Research; and
- Service.
While faculty must exhibit accomplishment in all three general categories, they need not show excellence in all activities within each category. The specific weight assigned to each category, in terms of the devotion of time and effort, may vary from year to year, and from one faculty member to another.
Qualitative assessments are designed to: ensure high teaching and research standards; encourage and acknowledge personal and professional growth; and enable the College to meet its educational and research mandates as a publicly funded institution.
This document provides a framework within which the significant achievements of faculty may be recognized and evaluated. Differences in academic programs require that Standards of Performance be interpreted flexibly according to the nature of the discipline. Deans of Faculties will provide faculty with guidance regarding expectations, consistent with this document.
With the exception of Teaching & Teaching-Related Responsibilities, the following items represent a range of possible activities for each Rank, and are not listed in order of importance.
