As you know, Laurentian University Faculty Association (LUFA) members have been on strike since 19 January 2026.

OCADFA has sent a solidarity donation to support LUFA’s strike, and we encourage our members to join us on calling on the Ministry of Colleges, Universities, Research Excellence and Security and the Laurentian University Board of Governors to lift the remaining CCAA Exit Loan Agreement restrictions and end the Ministry-Imposed approval and oversight on Laurentian’s financial mandate and collective bargaining.

LUFA also has a letter writing campaign that you can join your voice to. Tell the Laurentian Board of Governors to negotiate a fair deal for LUFA members: English and Francais.

URGENT NOTICE: The Laurentian admin has launched a time-limited public poll that will remain open for only 48 hours (ending Saturday, 31 January), asking who the community supports in the current labour dispute with the Laurentian University Faculty Association (LUFA).

Show them your support by both responding to the poll and actively circulating it: https://www.thesudburystar.com/opinion/laurentian-cant-afford-what-faculty-association-is-asking-for-wells-take-our-poll (The poll can be found at the end of the article.)

Nipissing University Faculty Association’s (NUFA) contract academic staff bargaining unit is also facing down a strike deadline. Please see a message below from OCUFA Executive Director Jenny Ahn about their letter writing campaign.

Dear colleagues,

I’m writing to ask you to take part in an important letter-writing campaign in support of contract academic staff represented by the Nipissing University Faculty Association (NUFA).

Contract academic staff at Nipissing play a critical role in delivering high-quality education at Nipissing University, teaching more than 55% of all courses. Like many contract faculty members across Ontario, they are seeking fair compensation and to protect their job security in a new collective agreement. They also want to maintain members’ rights around academic freedom. Progress at the bargaining table has been slow and NUFA recently received a no-board report with a strike date in early February.

NUFA is asking for broader community support. They have launched a letter-writing campaign calling on the Nipissing University administration to negotiate in good faith and reach a fair deal.

You can help by taking a few minutes to add your voice:

  • Visit the campaign page and send a letter urging the university to reach a fair and respectful agreement.
  • Consider personalizing the message to explain why fairness, stability, and respect for contract academic staff matter to you.
  • Share the letter campaign with your members and on your social media.

This issue is not unique to Nipissing University. Across the province, faculty associations affiliated with OCUFA are confronting agrowing reliance on precarious academic labour. When contract academic staff face instability and inequity, it affects working conditions of all faculty, and student learning, academic freedom, and the long-term health of Ontario’s public universities.

When faculty and academic professionals across Ontario stand together, we send a strong message: quality university education depends on fair and sustainable working conditions for everyone who delivers it.

Thank you for your solidarity and for supporting our colleagues at Nipissing University.

Jenny Ahn
